Abstract
The
Vaccine Advisory Committee of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics
provides –according to the available evidence- information and comments
on the new developments in vaccines that have taken place in 2007 and
recommends certain modifications to the Immunization Schedule for 2008.
A
second varicella vaccine dose, administered together with the booster
dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine when children starts school
(3-4 years), is recommended in order to avoid vaccine failures against
varicella-zoster virus.
Based
on existing scientific evidence, the importance of universal heptavalent
conjugate pneumococcal vaccination, as occurs in most similar European
countries and in the autonomous community of Madrid in Spain, is
reinforced.
Human
papillomavirus vaccine is included in the Inmmunization Schedule for
girls from 9 years old, and initially, at least up to 16 years old.
Vaccination against rotavirus in children starting at 6 weeks and
completing the series before six months is recommended.
Other
recommendations included in this year Immunization Schedule are
vaccination against flu and A hepatitis in risk groups and at
paediatrician discretion, as a first step towards future universal
recommendation.
